Youth groups contributed to the Conference through artistic expression for breastfeeding promotion and protection. This space complemented the scientific and epidemiological work of experts. WABA YOUth with RUMBA contributed a video presentation featuring individual testimonies by WABA Youth around the globe, inviting other youth to participate in the movement. Below are some experiences shared by Youth at the World Breastfeeding Conference
THE YOUTH AT THE WORLD BREASTFEEDING CONFERENCE by Xaviera Cabada, El Poder del Consumidor A.C. and IBFAN Mexico
As part of our concert about what children are being fed in the present times: industrialized food full of sugar, fat and salt: we decided to share important information at the conference, information about Mexico and the terrible situation we are living with the transnationals and the violations they've been complying on since decades .... especially Nestle. The promotion is very aggressive, very misleading and induces mothers to stop breastfeeding and start using alternative products, which are basically from Nestle because it's the main food company in the market of Mexico. Looking at this situation, we started analyzing the food labels and the sugar contents. We were very surprised to find that most baby milk formulas contain up to 54% of sugar and half of that is added sugar. With these shocking findings, we saw the necessity to share the information and got the opportunity to do it at the World Breastfeeding Conference.
We believe the young should be strongly involved because it is us young mothers who are being attached by these giant transnationals and we need all the information and support possible.
THANK YOU WORLD BREASTFEEDING CONFERENCE by John Musisi, IBFAN Uganda
The World Breastfeeding Conference was a precious moment for the young advocates who attended it as the discussions were enriching to the efforts we are involved in. The focus of the conference in emerging with a call for new way/ methods of marketing our product, "breastfeeding", was one thing i really went home with in my heart. Currently we are seeing many so called marketeers disguised as professionals in the area of feeding children, but with an interest of only selling their products. For a brighter future, the young people need to take a stand to ensure that "the Best which is Moms" should be the ideal passed on to the next generation. Thank you World Breastfeeding Conference for letting the world know that "Babies Need Mom Made not Man Made"
WBC MOTIVATES ME TO WORK PASSIONATELY FOR BREASTFEEDING by Viana Maza, RUMBA Guatamala
At the World Breastfeeding Conference I represented the Latin American Youth Movement, RUMBA. It was a unique experience that motivates me to continue working passionately for breastfeeding, especially among vulnerable population and youth.
